By Scarlet Jei Saoirse, Founder of Civic Lens News
As the founder of Civic Lens News, my mission is to expose injustices that target vulnerable communities. This commitment stems from my experience as a property manager at Passage Point, a transitional housing program operated by the YWCA. Founded in 2011, Passage Point was intended to provide a supportive environment for parents facing homelessness after incarceration, offering them a chance to reunite with their children and rebuild their lives.
However, what I witnessed was far from the program’s mission. Instead of hope and healing, I found a culture of exploitation, abuse, and systemic negligence—one that preys on the very individuals it was designed to help. Today, I am breaking my silence to expose the corruption and criminal activity hidden behind the YWCA’s carefully curated image.
Abuse of Power and Criminal Neglect
The YWCA leadership, including Chief Officer of Programs Jeanice Hardy and staff such as Emily Miller, and Tawesha McClain, have fostered an environment where abuse is normalized, and accountability is absent.
One particularly disturbing example involves Tawesha McClain, who continues to hold her position despite overwhelming evidence of misconduct. In a documented incident, a video captures a child being abused by his father on Passage Point’s premises, with McClain present and failing to intervene. All YWCA staff are mandated reporters, legally obligated to report and address child abuse. Despite multiple reports and this undeniable evidence, no action has been taken against her.
I personally reported this incident to leadership and shared the video with board members, yet it was met with silence. This inaction highlights a broader pattern of neglect and complicity within the organization.
The Fight for Transparency and Accountability
This article is based on my firsthand experience, supported by evidence I have gathered, including videos, contracts, and other documentation. These materials paint a damning picture of systemic failure and harm under the YWCA’s leadership.
I will be releasing extensive documentation to support these claims. While some files will be made available to the public, others will remain private and accessible only to authorized parties—including legal professionals, investigators, and oversight agencies—to ensure the integrity of the evidence and protect sensitive information.
A Call for Action
This is only the beginning. Over the coming weeks, I will release additional information to expose the YWCA’s failures and demand justice for those harmed by its negligence. I call on child protection services, housing authorities, nonprofit regulators, and law enforcement to conduct thorough investigations and hold the YWCA leadership accountable.
The immediate removal and criminal investigation of Tawesha McClain is an essential first step. However, the issues at the YWCA extend far deeper, and comprehensive reform is necessary to ensure the organization fulfills its mission without further harm to the communities it claims to serve.
Stay Tuned
This fight is far from over. As more evidence comes to light, I will continue to document and share the truth. My goal is not just to expose corruption but to demand systemic change and restore trust in institutions meant to support vulnerable populations.
